A Smart, Practical Plan to Tackle Food Costs & Connect Guelph

Guelph is a caring community. We have many groups doing incredible work to support people facing tough times. The challenge is, they are often working too hard, and too separate from one another. We have service gaps, duplicate effort, and we aren’t using our collective strength. It’s frustrating for the volunteers, and it’s dignified for those seeking help.

We need a fresh approach. Our “Connecting Guelph” plan is a practical framework to change this.

It’s built on two connected ideas:

  1. A Digital Community Clearinghouse: A simple, real-time hub that connects food rescue with shelters and pantries, maps available services, and allows groups to coordinate. Imagine a local restaurant with surplus food being able to instantly connect with a shelter that needs it. This reduces waste and ensures resources go where they are needed most.
  2. A Community Co-op Grocery Store: We propose a physical storefront on city land. This isn’t just about charity; it’s a dignified co-op. Everyone can shop there, but standard retail sales help subsidize deeply discounted bulk staples for those who need it. We’ll use a smart support voucher system that makes getting help respectful and private.

We’re designing this to be smart and responsible:

  • Protecting Taxpayers: We are building this with funding from existing provincial and federal grants, waste diversion budgets, and corporate partnerships, not by raising your property taxes.
  • Enforcing Accountability: Every group involved must meet clear metrics. This isn’t about bureaucracy; it’s about making sure municipal support is achieving real, measurable change in our community, with open transparency.
  • A Solid Legal Footing: Our plan is thoroughly legal and compliant with Ontario’s Municipal Act, ensuring a stable, legitimate operation.

This isn’t just a political promise; it’s a structural improvement for Guelph, made by listening to people with lived experience and our local service groups.

Let’s stop duplicating effort and start connecting our community. Read the full plan here and let’s get to work.
