Let’s rethink campaign signs

To all local candidates and campaign teams: I’m truly sorry to hear about the stolen and destroyed signs along College, Neeve, Arthur South, and Elizabeth streets among other places over Homecoming Weekend. Putting your name forward to serve our community takes immense dedication, and having your efforts vandalized leaving you to clean up debris and try to salvage damaged stakes is deeply frustrating.

While I sympathize with the affected campaigns, events like this highlight a broader issue: it’s time we move away from physical election signs entirely.

As a community that prides itself on environmental leadership, eco-friendly initiatives, and sustainability, continuing the practice of mass plastic sign deployment no longer aligns with our values. Here is why we should put an end to campaign signs in Guelph:

Environmental Impact & Waste: Most signs are made from single-use plastics (like corrugated plastic) and metal frames that are difficult to recycle, ending up in landfills or polluting our local soil and waterways.

Vandalism & Litter: Beyond stolen property, vandalized, knocked-over, or abandoned signs quickly turn into neighborhood litter and plastic waste scattered across public spaces.

Questionable Effectiveness: Modern voters rely on debates, policy platforms, digital engagement, and direct community dialogue to make informed decisions not lawn signs.

Resource Strain: Time and financial resources spent ordering, distributing, repairing, and collecting physical signs could be far better used directly engaging with residents.

Disregarding campaign materials isn’t just a petty prank it’s an environmental hazard and a drain on community resources. Let’s hold ourselves and our city to a higher standard: respect the democratic process, protect our local environment, and rethink how we run sustainable campaigns in Guelph.
