I am running for Mayor because I do not believe the needs of Guelph residents are being heard clearly enough or met effectively enough by our current governance.
I do not say that lightly. I have lived in Guelph for more than six years, after coming here to help care for my mother-in-law. Since arriving, I have paid close attention: listening to residents, observing how systems work, and seeing where people struggle to get the support, respect, and opportunities they deserve.
Assessing situations and finding practical ways to help has been part of my life for a long time. Sometimes it has been my work, other times it has simply been my sense of responsibility. I believe we all have a duty to use our knowledge, experience, and skills to strengthen the communities we call home.
To me, governance means acting on behalf of the people who have trusted you to lead responsibly, transparently, and with accountability. The Mayor is highly visible and often seen as the primary representative of a city, but municipal government is a shared responsibility. In Guelph, the Mayor and City Council must work together, with every member serving as a champion for the people they represent.
The Mayor must also understand the responsibilities and constraints of the position, including the obligation under Ontario law to consider the interests of the municipality as a whole. Council members have a responsibility to represent their wards while making decisions that support the entire city.
Guelph’s challenges are real, but they are not impossible to address. I have experienced many of them personally, and I have seen the struggles residents describe such as the difficulty of finding stability, being heard by institutions, accessing services, and simply trying to build a good life or survive each day.
Too often, people feel unheard not only by government, but by organizations and sometimes by one another. That needs to change.
We are at a crossroads. Growth and change are inevitable, but they must be thoughtful, responsible, and guided by the people most affected by the decisions being made. We cannot keep repeating the same processes and expect different results. Nor can we ignore what past decisions have shown us about whose voices are valued and whose needs are left behind.
Change begins when people speak clearly about what they expect from their leaders and when leaders are prepared to listen, act, and be accountable.
I am running for Mayor because I believe Guelph can do better. I believe our city needs leadership that listens first, brings people together, and works openly toward practical solutions that improve life for everyone.
